while you are reading this, you are seated. Seated on a chair or a sofa or a seat or a couch. Or most exceptionally, you are standing. Imagine the pain that your soft masses of adipose tissues would suffer if you are told to sit on a concrete surface for, say, an hour!
Pioneered by a dentist named Alfred.P. Southwick, the first chair was an electric one. Prisoners were strapped to the chair and given currents of altering voltages thus giving them a less painful way of dying than hanging them to death. It was soon outlawed with the introduction of lethal injections.
Ironically, a chair is an emblem of authority in the house of commons also being a symbol of death penalty. In fact, the word “chairman” announces the position of a superior in the edifice. There is no place in the world that is “chairless”. From Prime minister’s seat to toilet, a chair is seen everywhere but goes unnoticed. If this piece of furniture is disbanded completely, get ready for another war!
Think about the uproar and the outburst if there were no chairs and its parallels. How pleasing it would be to stand in a huge queue for appointments?! No seats in a car, in busses, in schools and colleges ! No wheelchairs. No armchairs. No recliners. No airplance seats, not to forget the comfortable lounges in cinemas! Funny how businessman and ministers would be conducting meetings sitting cross legged on the floor wearing formal suits and ties. No less than the evolution of a Panchayat!
You sleep on the bed, a kind of extended chair, use the commode, go to the college in your car/ bus/ train , sit on the benches and seats, go back home, fall into your favourite chair, use you PC , eat your food adorned with chairs on a dining table, go back to sleep and the history repeats. Tell me, who uses a computer lying on the floor? Or prefers to sit on the floorboard of a car? If there exist a person as such, I salute him with all due respect!
Visualize a place with nothing to comfort your precious body.
Behold the captivating beauty around you. You live in a marvellous place.
